HECTOR ALVAREZ
Founder

Mr. Alvarez is the founder of Alvarez Associates, a firm specializing in workplace violence prevention. He understands the challenges organizations and communities face addressing the threat of violence because he has lived them.  As a young man he faced the effects of domestic violence first hand. As a young EMT he once talked a women down who had just shot her husband.  While working in the computer field he helped design security controls to stop armed gangs from stealing valuable memory chips.  He was the Security Director for a high tech utility and regularly investigated threats against our nation’s critical infrastructure and the employees who worked to provide power for millions of people. He has also witnessed the collapse of civil order first-hand as a responder to both the Loma Prieta Earthquake and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. And, as a volunteer police officer he routinely faced potentially violent situations.  

Over 15 years ago Mr. Alvarez started one of the nations most progressive "civilian focused" active violence prevention programs; highly trained armed guards, force option simulators, safe rooms, threat assessment teams and regular training for employees.  He has personally evaluated and managed hundreds of potentially violent situations, developed numerous violence prevention programs and trained thousands of security officers, employees and managers in workplace violence prevention. He has built over 25 years of experience in the field of violence prevention and uses this experience as the foundation of Alvarez Associates.  Mr. Alvarez now has the privilege of working with organizations both corporate and community based to build safer communities.

JOHN J. HABEREK
Principal Security Consultant

Mr. Haberek is a 33-year veteran of the fire service with experience in emergency operations, emergency management, emergency medical services, emergency preparedness, fire & life safety, and homeland security.  He served for over 24 years with the Los Angeles County Fire Department where his positions included firefighter/paramedic, fire inspector, and fire captain. During his time with that organization, Mr. Haberek managed the fire & life safety compliance for daycare centers; public and private schools; colleges; hospitals; assisted care centers and jails within an area the size of Rhode Island. He also served as one of two fire captains assigned to the Homeland Security Section with the responsibility of preparing one of the nation’s largest fire departments to effectively respond to a terrorist event in the post 9/11 environment.


In 2006, Mr. Haberek accepted a management position with a fire department in Northern California where his duties included emergency management, emergency preparedness and homeland security. In this role he worked with the regional office of homeland security and regional intelligence center in conducting vulnerability and threat assessments of critical infrastructure facilities, coordinating a terrorism liaison officer program, and conducting training in those areas.  As a Principal Security Consultant of Alvarez Associates, Mr. Haberek brings his unique insight and experience to our clients.

MARK BRENNER
Principal Security Consultant

Mr. Brenner has 22 years work experience in both the private and public sectors.

In 1992, shortly after graduating from California State University, Chico with a Bachelors degree in Communication Studies, he began a career with an international investment company. Mr. Brenner worked in Customer Service, System Administration, and Business Relationship Management.  One of his most critical roles with the organization was as the project lead for the company’s investment accounting system conversion which, at the time, was the largest accounting conversion on record.  He was also responsible for creating and maintaining the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan for the entire Rancho Cordova Site.  Before leaving the organization, he earned his Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix.
After leaving Franklin Templeton, Mr. Brenner worked shortly as the Vice President of a national collection agency, responsible for Personnel and Training.

In 2003, Mr. Brenner began a career in law enforcement after graduating from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Academy.  After completing the academy, he worked briefly as a deputy for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department at the Sacramento County Main Jail.  Mr. Brenner left the Sheriff’s Department and joined the Folsom Police Department as a Police Officer.  During his career with the Folsom Police Department, he worked as a patrol officer and a school resource officer.  In these positions, Mr. Brenner handled violent situations daily.  As a school resource officer, he worked to predict violent trends and planned for emergency situations at the schools.  Additionally, he has experience as a crime scene investigator, crisis negotiator and assisted in strategic planning and worked on a department continuous improvement team.  His career was cut short due to injuries, now he brings his passion for helping others to our clients.

BRYAN SATHER
Principal Security Consultant/Manager Investigative Services

Mr. Sather is a retired law enforcement Commander with 29 years of experience. Throughout his career he held positions in various assignments, including but not limited to; emergency management, emergency preparedness, training officer, defensive tactic instructor, special investigations/narcotics, canine handler, persons and property crime investigations.

As a Commander, he was responsible for the oversight of the entire Police Departments Budget, Communications Bureau, Volunteer Bureau, and Records Bureau. His prior Command Assignments included the Investigations Division, Operations Division, and Special Operations Division. Mr. Sather also was involved as a consultant with the Folsom Cordova Unified School District during the implementation of a grant for a school safety and evacuation plan in the event of any type of emergency situation.

Mr. Sather holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Administration of Justice. He also received his Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Management certificates from the Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Mr. Sather was selected in 2006 to attend the highly respected F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico Virginia. The management courses were related to Cyber-crimes, violent behaviorial crimes, terrorism, and judicial law.

Mr. Sather was involved in curriculum design for implementing, developing, and teaching lesson plans for law enforcement officers/personnel. This was instructed as a problem based learning technique to encourage students to participate and build community within the classroom and workplace.

Mr. Sather was directly involved in implementing CEPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) with businesses who were either moving their operations, or opening a new business within the City of Folsom.

Currently Mr. Sather is a licensed Private Investigator.

Mr. Sather is passionate about the safety of the community, and through Alvarez & Associates is bringing and sharing his expertise to future cliental.
